Beginner’s Guide to Wedding Insurance
Insurance — By Dolce Sposa on January 2, 2010 at 7:40 amDolce Sposa would like to share with all our readers some basic information about wedding insurance. We highly recommend you to purchase wedding insurance to protect yourselves from anything that might go wrong. We know that wedding insurance can seem quite complicated at first with all the strange terms and the legal jargon so I have made a brief beginner’s guide to wedding insurance to help you when you first start out with your search.

What is Wedding Insurance?
Wedding insurance provides financial cover for specific events at your wedding, such as cancellation, stolen presents, photographer failure and many more. A wedding is an investment which often involves huge amounts of money. Wedding insurance protects your investment so that if something goes wrong you are able to claim financial compensation.
Getting Started with Wedding Insurance
The first thing you must ask yourself when it comes to wedding insurance is whether you need it. If you are having a very small wedding without much investment on your part, you may decide against it. But even a very basic wedding can benefit from wedding insurance. For example, the loss of the wedding rings or the failure of the photographer may be enough to make it a worthwhile investment.
If you are spending a fair amount of money, ask yourself how much you would be prepared to lose should you have to cancel the wedding. Also ask yourself how disappointed you would be if the photographer failed to turn up or the cake got damaged and you had to order a new one. If you would like peace of mind for these possible events, then it’s a good idea to take out wedding insurance.
Cover Levels
After you have decided that you want to take out wedding insurance, you should then decide on the level of cover that you require. All wedding insurance providers will offer a number of different cover levels which will cover different events and provide different financial limits. Generally speaking, the more expensive policies will cover more events and provide a greater level of cover for each.
If you want to get a high amount of cover for one event, but don’t require cover for something else, then you may be able to mix and match your policy cover. Always phone up your chosen provider and ask about options if you have particular requests as they may be able to arrange a more specific policy for your needs.
Getting a Quote
Once you have a good idea of what you are looking for, it’s a good idea to shop around and get a number of quotes from different providers. It is a competitive market and you may be surprised by the difference in premiums. To assist you, we at Dolce Sposa have created a wedding insurance comparison table to help you compare wedding insurance policies from some of the leading insurers in the UK.
Read the Small Print
Always go over the details of exactly what your policy entails, preferably before you have taken out your cover. You will be able to find these on any insurance company’s website, and it is your job to make sure you are covered for every eventuality before you purchase the policy.
GLOSSARY
Here are some terms that you may come across when planning your wedding insurance, along with their definitions.
Excess – The amount of money that you have to pay on a claim before you can start to get compensation. E.g. for a claim of £150, you may have to pay the first £35.
Liability – Any actions you take that result in damage or harm to people or property for which you are liable to pay the costs.
Quote – The amount that an insurance provider will charge you to take out the policy. The quote can be altered by adding or withdrawing certain events and through changing the level of excess.
Pre-Existing Medical Condition – Any medical condition that you already had before you purchased your insurance policy. This is only relevant to personal accident cover.
Premium – The total cost of your insurance policy.
Indemnity – The technical term for a payout after you have made a claim.
